While I’m not the biggest rap/hip hop fan, I do have some that I really like, including Suicideboys. A friend introduced me to them a couple of years ago and I took a deep dive into the discography. It’s still one that I like to throw on. The beats are my favorite parts. I like the depressive lyrical themes, but they also have some comedy… And of course, misogyny (what genre doesn’t).

Cleveland Suicideboys Show

My daughter got into them eventually, too, and one of her friends. I took her to see them in Cleveland on Friday, September 27th. The light show was amazing. The setlist was largely tracks from the latest album New World Depression. I like that album, but I was really hoping they would play more tracks from Long Term Effects of Suffering.

For parents nervous about their teenagers liking the $uicideboy$, I liked that $crim took a few minutes to talk about their past and encourage everyone to push through it, regardless of their struggles. He reminded everyone how happy he is to be here and how proud he is of his accomplishments… There’s more to live for. I appreciated that as a parent and as someone with mental illness. In my eyes, it is not much different than being into grunge as a kid… Depression and drug use were heavy themes of that music, too.

My 3 Favorites from the $uicideboy$ Discography

I enjoy the discography, but I have a few favorites for various reasons. The albums/mixtapes listed below are not in a particular order. Put another way, I’m not ranking them per say. I also think the latest record, New World Depression is pretty good, I just haven’t had as much time with it as these others.

Long Term Effects of Suffering (2021)

“New Profile Pic” was the first song I remember hearing by the $uicideboy$ and that got me interested in the whole album. Lyrically, I think it’s their best work and I love how the songs flow into one another. The beats are stellar and I really love $crim’s parts (he’s my favorite). I typically listen to The Long Term Effects of Suffering from start to finish without skipping tracks.

My daughter got really into this record as well. Funny enough, we each got each other the vinyl for Christmas last year. I would like to get more $uicideboy$ vinyl eventually. As of right now, it’s the only physical media from them that I have in my collection (and she has in hers).

6 Favorite Tracks on Long Term Effects of Suffering

These are not ranked in order of my favorite, I’m way too indecisive for that. They are listed in order of their appearance on the record. Gun to my head and I had to pick a favorite $uicideboy$ song it would probably be “The Number You Have Dialed Is Not in Service.”

1. If Self-Destruction Was an Olympic Sport
2. Life Is but a Stream~
3. 5 Grand at 8 to 1
4. New Profile Pic
5. Ugliest
6. The Number You Have Dialed Is Not in Service

My Liver Will Handle What My Heart Can’t (2015)

This is another album that I don’t typically skip tracks with. Sometimes I do skip “T.R.U.” but outside of that, I really like this album in its entirety.

6 Favorite Tracks on My Liver Will Handle What My Heart Can’t

Again, not in a particular order, just in order they appear on the album. Not sure if they are Slayer fans, but that was a bold song title choice if so. I do know that Ruby used to play in punk and hardcore bands. I also saw some pits going on at the show which was cool.

1. Vincent Van Gogh Ain’t Got Shit On Me
2. Reign in Blood
3. Shattered Amethyst
4. Opal Ring
5. Whoa, I’m Woeful
6. Kill Yourself (Part III)

My favorite track on the new album so far.

Dark Side Of The Clouds (2016)

I’m not sure how much homage they drop to Dark Side of the Moon ha, but I really love their album and song titles.

6 Favorite Tracks on Dark Side of the Clouds

1. Cherry P.I.E
2. Praisethedevil
3. Jeffer Drive
4. AM/PM
5. Golden Calf (Feat. Eddy Baker & Fat Nick)
6. Grayscale (Feat. JGRXXN, Black Smurf & RVMIRXZ)

Overall

At the end of the day, I really enjoy the discography of $uicideboy$. Maybe I’ll deep dive with more artists like this. I feel like most people follow me for metal and rock… And for those of us that venture beyond that and dig some kinds of hip hop/rap… Maybe you’ll check out $uicideboy$.
